Welcome at Choice Magazine February 2022 Issue
While the world remains in turmoil, and not just from Covid, it is comforting to look out of the window and see that nature is progressing in its usual implacable style.
All over the garden are signs of life. Snowdrops are lifting their heads and the daffodils, tulips and other spring bulbs are pushing up for what looks like a very early season. The Japonica, trained along the wall, is dotted with white blossom.
In the air the red kites are displaying in aerial patterns above the fields and look like they will be nesting again this year in a small group of old pines. Blue tits, coal tits, great tits and a little flock of long-tailed tits are battling with the squirrels and pigeons for a place at the bird table. The robin is trying to see them all off.
Trying to emulate that example of carrying on regardless, we decided on our usual New Year’s Day sea-air trip to the east coast which restrictions forbade last year.
Every time we do this we always say never again on a bank holiday or a busy weekend, but always relent, forgetting that we will be stuck in traffic to get in and get out.
It was the same this year but at least there was a very fresh breeze that made it very difficult for the virus. However, three hours extra stuck in queues or making long diversions to avoid them makes me think: never again. Watch this space!
Although it was an enjoyable walk and there was plenty to see as a few brave windsurfers and kite surfers enjoyed the blustery day I couldn’t help wondering if it would have been better to watch nature unfurl in the garden.
