Once again, we appear before you on a bi-monthly basis in the form of a print (and digital!) magazine meant to entertain you with the very best in anime, manga, gaming, cosplay, and whatever else the fantastical end of Japanese pop culture can offer. So, what do we have in store for you this time? Well …
To Your Eternity, a show about an immortal being with an epic identity crisis, is our cover feature, which we hope you will enjoy. Up next, Kara Dennison indulges in some supernatural hijinks with her take on Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun. Then, Daryl Surat lets the cards fall where they may with a feature on the high-stakes anime Kakegurui–Compulsive Gambler. Following that, Michael Goldstein stands at the threshold of Season Two of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid by taking a gaze back at the first batch of episodes full of comedy and fantasy. And finally, Britney Vincent gets rough and tough and explores the many time-twisting thrills of Tokyo Revengers!
In between these big features, you’ll find our regular departments chock full of anime and game reviews, manga previews (and reviews), cosplay pics, new items worth checking out, and even an appearance by the King of the Monsters himself, Godzilla!
So, what else is going on? Well, right now as I sit here writing this, we’re in the middle of high summer in Japan, and believe me when I tell you it’s getting (very) hot in here. I love the crystal blue skies and the shiny brightness of everything during this time of year, but the actual agonizing heat and humidity … not so much! One new anime I’ve seen recently that seems to do a great job of visualizing the pop-art colors and the simmering vibes of summer in Japan is a new film called Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. Its available now on Netflix, and it is pure eye candy, so check it out!
On a more personal note, I can finally come clean about a very big project that has now, at long last, been completed. As I hinted at mightily in my last OUSA editorial, I have been at the grindstone working on a new book. Now I can tell you more, starting with the title!
My new book is called (drum roll, please …) Crunchyroll Essential Anime: Fan Favorites, Memorable Masterpieces, and Cult Classics! This epic tome, featuring reviews, information, and analysis of 50 different must-see anime titles, is slated to come out in Spring 2022 from Running Press.
The book was co-written by Samuel Sattin (who wrote the graphic-novel adaptation of the Wolfwalkers animated film), and there are some other surprise contributors to be featured in the book who should be familiar to folks who pick up OUSA. I can’t reveal them until we get a wee bit closer to publication date, but stay tuned!
Writing a book about anime that covers the history of the medium, starting back in the age of Astro Boy and Speed Racer and moving all the way up to modern-day smash hits like Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, really was a workout for me. And, as a victory lap of sorts, I was inspired to write the cover story for this issue on To Your Eternity, a very special show that may very well one day qualify as an Essential Anime! You never know! In the meantime, please enjoy the new issue of Otaku USA!
