I think we can say that we have been, at the time of writing this, going through some interesting times. Covid-19 is certainly altering a lot of what we can do and when, and it is likely to do so for much more time to come yet. I do hope that you are all keeping safe.
As you might guess, I have had a lot of calls and correspondence from many carvers and other crafts people who have been sharing with me what they have been up to during their time of restrictions as to travel and such like.
Most have commented that they have been far more active online and exploring more carving ideas, forums and watching YouTube. Some have also said that they have been busier in the workshop.
That last comment brings a smile to my face. It means people are making things in the workshop. Let’s face it, most people comment that they think about being in the workshop more than they actually end up in the workshop. Now that situation has changed. Is it because there is such bad daytime TV? I am only teasing.
Many people will have a new enthusiasm, and will no doubt have a bit of a clear up and then sharpen the tools.
I find there are two type of people – those who keep their tools sharp af ter use so they are ready to use right away, and those who sharpen them afresh as and when they use them so they are always ready for use. I keep mine sharp and ready for use all the time. If I had left my tools blunt and not ready for use during my apprenticeship – let’s just say a few harsh words would have been said.
So, workshop beckoning, what are you making?
Believe it or not, many people are now making things ready for Christmas. Others are just having fun and working from a sketch or photo they have done. I don’t mind, it is the fact that people are carving that is the wonderful thing.
The journey that is woodcarving is a wonderful one to experience and partake of and I have had the pleasure of working with, meeting, talking to and liaising via letters and online some incredibly talented people, as well as those who love carving for the pure joy of doing so.
I have been working with GMC Publications – and, of course, Woodcarving magazine – in some form for more than 20 years now. Sadly, due to a terminal illness, the time has come for me to hand over to a new team to take the magazine forward. Don’t worry, many of the new team at GMC already work on the magazine in one way or other, so it is in very capable hands. Please share with the new team what you have been making in the workshop and thank you to you all for making it such a wonderful time working on the magazine, hearing from many of you and making my journey in carving such a delight.
