Welcome at BBC Gardeners’ World magazine May 2020 issue
At the height of a storm, you can never see far ahead – just what’s there in front of you, to reach and touch. As I write this, it feels like we’re in the eye of the storm– with the world changing by the hour, even minute. But step out into our gardens, and we get a different view. Change in the garden is more subtle – a slower ripple effect, that’s part of what makes gardening so calming. The act of planting something makes us look ahead, with hope and optimism.
And while new shoots may look unassuming now, as a gardener I know the y will power ahead and by the end of May be approaching the big picture I’d always imagined. This will happen across the land – from tiny backyards to the largest public gardens that, currently, lie quiet behind closed gates. But for now,we focus on the smaller picture, close at hand – and you’ll find plenty to keep you active and enjoying your own garden within these pages.
But the gates will open again across Britain: roll on the day! When they do, let’s support them– and we’ve over 460 gardens in our 2 for 1 Garden Entry scheme – in their hour of need.
For now, take time to nurture and be nurtured by your garden – and share, through email or social media, the small things that mean so much to you. Here’s to a calm and restorative month in our gardens.
